Workshop Overview
Effective teaching is a complex yet critical endeavor. During this event, hosted by Ottumwa Community Schools, educators at all levels—from teachers to superintendents and principals—will gain tools and strategies to strengthen their practice in ways that directly support Career and Technical Education (CTE).
Participants will explore practical applications that enhance both academic and technical instruction, helping students develop the knowledge, skills, and mindsets needed for success in college, career, and life.
Discussion and learning will focus on the importance of a common language for talking about instruction and on a framework for effective teaching using The New Art and Science of Teaching (NASOT) as a guide. This research-based framework provides strategies that CTE educators can use to increase student engagement, personalize learning, and align instruction with CTE standards.

Mike Ruyle
Mike Ruyle, EdD, has served as a classroom teacher, athletic coach, school principal, alternative program director, university professor, and educational presenter for over 30 years. He led the creation and implementation of personalized, competency-based schools in Montana and California and is a recognized authority in the areas of assessment practice, mindfulness in classrooms, social justice, culturally responsive pedagogy, and healing-centered schooling.
Dr. Ruyle is the author of the book Leading the Evolution: How to Make Personalized Competency-Based Education a Reality, as well as a coauthor of The New Art and Science of Classroom Assessment and Cultivating Mindfulness in the Classroom.
